The UC Livermore Collaboration Center (UCLCC), located within the Livermore Valley Open Campus, is dedicated to connecting people, expertise, technology and equipment across the ten UC campuses, three national labs, five medical centers, and statewide agriculture and natural resources program. Since opening our doors in September 2022, we’ve been a resource for these institutions’ talented scientists and technologists to help navigate barriers to collaboration so they can better address some of this nation’s most pressing challenges. In 2023, we hosted more than 2,700 in-person guests and 900 virtual attendees in events covering a variety of important topics and disciplines. We are on track in 2024 to grow these numbers with exciting collaborations expanding and returning to UCLCC.
These experts choose UCLCC because they recognize it offers a remarkable collection of resources and facilities – including a modern physical space and expert staff – that can energize any collaborative effort. Whether you’re expanding and accelerating a research program, educating colleagues and students, cultivating an expert workforce, deepening community ties or improving the workplace, UCLCC’s bold approach sparks conversations where innovation thrives.
If you believe your work could benefit from a sustained partnership across diverse disciplines and institutions, we encourage you to utilize UCLCC and leverage our inhouse staff to help make your event successful. History
In September 2022, following an extensive nine-month renovation, the three-building Hertz Hall complex on the east side of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) became the University of California Livermore Collaboration Center (UCLCC). At the opening ceremony, UC Vice President for National Laboratories Craig Leasure, PhD, and LLNL Lab Director Kim Budil, PhD, both called the transformation of the new center “extraordinary.”
Perhaps that’s because the $6.5 million investment reflects a passionate vision for creating a system-wide UC asset dedicated to expanding and creating new collaborative research, workforce development, pipeline enhancement, community outreach and workspace improvement events that strategically leverage the entire UC system.
The vision is an inspired extension of the original use of UCLCC’s core building, Hertz Hall, which served as the UC Davis Department of Applied Science (DAS). Known as Teller Tech, DAS was established in 1963 at the urging of LLNL co-founder and former director Edward Teller, who wanted to see a university-level educational facility at the Livermore site. Over more than 40 years, the world-class program awarded nearly 400 PhDs, including one to Dr. Budil. About 50 percent of DAS graduates took their first job at LLNL.
Nevertheless, by 2011 UC Davis had closed DAS and the east side buildings saw fewer and fewer uses. Determined to revitalize the connective tissue that exists between UC and the national labs, Dr. Budil and June Yu, PhD, associate vice president for the UC national laboratories set out to make the vision a reality. UCLCC is the result. The three buildings are ideal for enhancing and inspiring collaborative work. With eight offices, a general lab, two courtyards and eight conference/classrooms of different sizes, the facilities can easily be reconfigured for various uses.
