Neil Narang is Interim Associate Vice President for UC National Laboratories at the University of California Office of the President, where he works to strengthen strategic partnerships, research collaboration, and connections between the University of California and the national laboratories. He is also an Associate Professor of Political Science at UC Santa Barbara and Co-Director of the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.
Narang’s career spans university leadership, national security policy, and the national laboratory enterprise. He previously served as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy as a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellow, and as a junior faculty fellow and visiting professor at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation. He was subsequently elected a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
His research and policy work focus on nuclear security, deterrence and alliances, emerging technologies, and international security. He is co-editor of Emerging Technologies and International Stability and Nonproliferation Policy and Nuclear Posture. Narang received his Ph.D. in Political Science from UC San Diego and his B.A. in Molecular Cell Biology and Political Science from UC Berkeley.
