Department of Energy Announces $179 Million for Microelectronics Science Research Centers

January 14, 2025 by Garren Weiss

Centers focus on basic research to transform the energy efficiency of microelectronics and create microelectronics for extreme environments

Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $179 million in funding for three Microelectronics Science Research Centers (MSRCs). These three MSRCs will perform basic research in microelectronics materials, device and system design, and manufacturing science to transform future microelectronics technologies. The MSRCs were authorized by the Micro Act, passed in the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, and complement the activities appropriated under the CHIPS and Science Act at the Department of Commerce, the Department of Defense, and other agencies.

Consortium with Minority Serving Institutions Delivers Opportunities for Students

October 30, 2024 by Garren Weiss

The Consortium for High Energy Density Science (CfHEDS) had much to celebrate at its annual meeting this summer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

“It was exciting to connect with our academic partners and their students,” said Federica Coppari, the LLNL liaison to CfHEDS. “The best part is hearing from the students about their research experience.”

The goal of CfHEDS is to expand and diversify the pipeline of students in high-energy-density science (HEDS), a field critical to much of the work done at LLNL. In 2018, CfHEDS was launched with a grant from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)’s Minority Serving Institution Partnership Program (MSIPP), which has been renewed through 2027.

Livermore Valley Open Campus Hits Collaborative Stride

July 11, 2024 by Garren Weiss

Increasing national security requirements and a significant change in the workforce demanded that Lawrence Livermore and Sandia national laboratories shift the way they do business after more than 50 years.

Both labs traditionally had recruited from top universities’ graduate programs and once people joined, they spent their career on the East Avenue facilities in Livermore. For some, they found the work so interesting that after they retired, they volunteered to continue their research.
