University of California Initiative for Fusion Energy

September 25, 2024 by Garren Weiss

December 10-11, 2024: San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC San Diego

The University of California Initiative for Fusion Energy workshop aims to facilitate opportunities for new partnerships, collaborations, and discussions among three national laboratories scientists and UC faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate students on cutting edge science and technology of fusion energy. The conference organizers represent fusion energy expertise from three national laboratories (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) and at least five UC campuses (UC San Diego, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, and UC Santa Cruz). The workshop will address important research questions and engineering and design challenges necessary for fusion energy to transition from the laboratory to a commercially viable power plant.

To address and solve these challenges, register here to join the workshop, either in-person or virtually.

U.S. Department of Energy - Office of Science
Funding Opportunity Announcement: FY 2024 Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW)Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) Number: DE-FOA-0003280Total Estimated Funding: $50 MillionDeadline for Pre Applications (required): April 30, 2024 at 5:00pm ET   Deadline for Applications:July 23, 2024 at 11:59pm ET  The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science (SC) is announcing that $50 million is available to build foundations for SC research through traineeships at academic institutions that have been historically underrepresented in the SC portfolio. The Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative supports traineeships for students and postdoctoral researchers from non-R1 emerging research institutions and non-R1 minority serving institutions in areas relevant to SC programs. SC seeks applications to develop traineeships for participants from these institutions that involve conducting research in partnership with a DOE-affiliated institution, including DOE National Laboratories, SC user facilities, Bioenergy Research Centers, or DOE Isotope Program Production Sites. In addition to a webinar describing the FOA, SC will host office hours on April 17, April 25, July 10, and July 18 at 2:00 pm ET for administrative questions related to the FOA. More information on RENEW initiative, including frequently asked questions and office hour registration, is available on the RENEW website.View Funding OpportunityWebinarA webinar will be held to provide information to the community on the RENEW FOA.March 21, 202412 pm ETRegister for Webinar
